If verses about submission, suffering, or obedience have been used to keep you compliant or silent, that use was a distortion, not the teaching itself.
What it can look like
Being told that submission means silence. Being told your suffering is redemptive so you should accept it. Being told that reporting would harm the Church. Being told God will punish you for leaving.
None of these are Catholic teaching. They are coercion wearing religious language.
How to recognize it
A pattern worth naming: verses used only to demand something of you, never to hold the other person accountable; Scripture invoked to shut down questions rather than to answer them; appeals to obedience that always benefit the person speaking.

Common misconceptions
- “Wives must submit to their husbands no matter what.”
- Ephesians 5 calls husbands to a self-sacrificial love 'as Christ loved the Church': that standard is never met by control or abuse, which the passage does not license.
- “Suffering redemptively means you should stay and endure abuse.”
- Redemptive suffering in Catholic teaching refers to uniting unavoidable suffering to Christ's, not seeking out or remaining in avoidable harm someone else is causing you.
