After betrayal, caution is not a character flaw: it is your mind doing exactly what it should to keep you safe. Trust that rebuilds slowly, if it rebuilds at all, is not a sign of unhealed damage.
Trust is built in small, tested increments
Healthy trust is calibrated to actual, demonstrated trustworthiness over time, not given all at once, and not owed to anyone because of a title, a relationship, or a role.
This applies to people and, for many survivors, to God as well. It is acceptable to trust God with one small thing today and nothing more.
Signs it may be safe to extend a little trust
Consistency over time, not just words. Willingness to hear 'no' without punishing you. Behavior that matches promises, especially when no one is watching.
What Scripture says

Common misconceptions
- “If you're a person of faith, you should trust easily.”
- Faith and discernment are not opposites; Scripture repeatedly counsels testing spirits and people rather than trusting automatically.

- · Practice trusting in very small, low-stakes situations first, and notice how it goes before increasing the stakes.
