Faith After Abuse

Childhood abuse

What happened to you as a child was never a child's responsibility.

A child cannot consent, cannot fully understand what is happening, and cannot be responsible for an adult's choice to harm them. That remains true no matter how old you are now.

Why this can surface later

It is common for memories, feelings, or the full weight of childhood abuse to surface in adulthood: during a pregnancy, a relationship, a milestone, or with no clear trigger at all. Delayed processing is not a sign anything is wrong with you.

If a child is currently at risk

If you know or suspect a child is being abused right now, contact Childhelp or local law enforcement. In the United States, many adults are legally mandated reporters in professional roles, but anyone can and should report suspected child abuse.

What Scripture says

  • Matthew 18:6

Common misconceptions

You must have done something to provoke it, even as a child.
Children cannot provoke abuse; the entire responsibility belongs to the adult who abused them.
If you don't remember everything clearly, it might not have happened.
Fragmented or unclear memory is a well-documented feature of childhood trauma and does not mean the abuse did not occur.

Questions people are often afraid to ask

A prayer for the child you were

God, be near to the child I was, who did not have anyone to protect them the way they needed.

That child was never at fault. Amen.
